Wired to Worship: A 7-Day Devotional Inspired by the Jesus Music Film and BookSampl
Gospel Music for A Restless Age
The Jesus Movement was birthed in an age of great social unrest and division, a time not unlike our own. The world, from our windows, often looks hopeless. Our social media timelines rain down bad news. Our families are struck by sickness, mental health challenges, and pain. The church is facing opposition from without and division from within. A deep cynicism is rising, even among the people of God.
But perhaps this is the moment where God might be birthing something we cannot yet see, a revival stirring in the charred embers of society’s lost hope. At the beginning of the 1970s, no one predicted that the chaos of the late ’60s and early ’70s would be fertile ground for a spiritual movement of young people, burned out by the false remedies of sex and drugs and rebellion. And yet, in unlikely places among unlikely people, the Spirit of God raised a generation.
It’s tempting for us to lament our times, wish we could go back to a mythical period in church history, and recapture some golden era. But God has not called us to nostalgia but to heed his call to live in mission for him right now, right here, in this place. The same God who breathed out every other movement is working today. So don’t despair. Instead, look around for where God is working and join him. Pray for revival. Worship with abandon. Ask God for the courage to live for him in a day where so many have turned away.
The God of the Jesus movement, the God who worked among the throngs at the great Billy Graham crusades, the God who worked in the Great Awakenings and Welsh revivals, and every other movement in church history can work among us today.
So, let’s abandon our cynicism and shed our nostalgia, and ask God to ignite a work today that only he can do.
