The Greatest in Heaven
Think back to your childhood. What was the most significant event you experienced? It could be good or bad, exciting or scary. If you close your eyes, you could probably imagine that situation pretty clearly.
Early childhood experiences are crucial to the development of kids. As their bones and bodies grow, their brains, personalities, and coping mechanisms are growing and developing too.
There will be experiences likely shared by all children—like learning their first word or losing a tooth. And there will be unique experiences based on their life circumstances—like divorce or abuse.
These experiences don’t even need to be big to be drastic. Moving to a new neighborhood, starting at a new school, or adapting to a new sibling can be overwhelming for them.
In all cases, their experiences matter. And more than that, they matter. In Matthew 18, a disciple asks Jesus, “Who is the greatest in heaven?”
Jesus’ reply probably shocked the crowds. After calling a child close to Him, He says:
“See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven.” Matthew 18:10 NIV
God values children, and so should we.
Imagine what it would be like for a child to grow up in a kind, loving, and Christ-centered home. How might our world look different if this was a more common experience for the majority of kids?
Whether you have your own kids or not, each of us can impact kids around us. You can volunteer at a school, mentor a neighbor’s kid or a family friend, or serve in a children’s ministry.
When you get involved in a child’s life, you’re learning more about the character of God, you’re likely gaining a better perspective on life, and you’re becoming a little more like Jesus.
Pray: God, when I think about my childhood experiences, I think about ______. In all ways, I thank You for this memory because I know that You will use it for Your glory. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Challenge: Find one way to use your gifts, talents, and passions to create positive experiences for a child around you.
