Experiencing connection with God is not about making a one-time decision, praying a prayer, or being dunked in a baptismal pool (though those are all good things). Connecting with God, pursuing a life he rewards, is a marathon, not a sprint. We commit to grow, to pray, and to read the Bible, no matter what season of life we’re in. We commit to honor God in our home, to work with integrity, and to teach the younger generation. We commit to forgive, to participate with the Holy Spirit, and to live generously. And we commit to finish well. 

If you’re a high school or college student, commit to finish your scholastic season honoring the Lord.

If you’re a businessperson, persevere in doing good, intending to finish that season well. 

If you’re a stay-at-home mom or a corporate achiever, finish your season in a way that leaves no doubt about your faithful service to our Lord.

Persevere. Complete your task well. If you do, you’ll discover the satisfaction and joys of a race well run. . . .

The followers of Christ are in a relay race together. Some of us are in the first leg of our journey with God, while others are in the homestretch. No matter your position, though, don’t give up. You’ve been called to finish this season well, serving as an example for the one to whom you’ll hand the baton.

I intend for the best days to be the days ahead. I refuse to allow my story to be understood by a recitation of past activity, whether achievement or failure. I am happy for those who dream dreams of what was, but I choose to live with a vision of what can be. I am not striving for a participation trophy. I realize the finish line is the point of evaluation, and all that precedes it is just preparation. I have offered myself in service to the King of kings, and I intend to be about his business until the moment he steps into time or I step out.
