Things I Don't Like About Myself: Devotions From Time Of Grace

DAY 1 OF 5

My procrastination

I get a lot of laughs from “demotivation” posters—you know, the ones designed to look like inspirational office artwork but that instead have a subversive and ironic message. One of my favorites reads, “PROCRASTINATION—Hard work and discipline may pay off someday, but laziness always pays off right now.” Hahaha.

I laugh when I see that poster, but it’s a nervous laugh. My insides know that I hate procrastination in myself. I know that putting off a job costs me a lot more energy. In the long run I will feel depressed and guilty failing to meet deadlines. My excuses, while perhaps fooling others, fool neither God nor my own heart. I know that this is true: “Sluggards do not plow in season, so at harvest time they look but find nothing” (Proverbs 20:4).

How to break out of this rut? I find I have much better days when I start my morning with a devotion in the Word instead of putting it off till late. I do better when I ask God for help with my weaknesses.

Most of all, I do better when I stop the lying and self-justification and just tell the truth to God and myself. I really do love God, and it’s refreshing and healthy to re-remember that I work for him in all I do.
