Overcoming Fear

Peter was an experienced fisherman. He knew that fishing was done at night, when the fish rose to the surface. Yet, after a night of toil and empty nets, Jesus asked him to try again, in broad daylight and in front of a crowd. It was an illogical, almost embarrassing request. Yet, Peter chose to overcome the fear of failure and shame and trusted Jesus’ word.

This is true courage: not the absence of fear, but the decision to act by faith, even when logic says otherwise. Peter could have refused, but instead he accepted the challenge and the result was extraordinary: a catch so abundant that the boats sank.

Joshua also faced a similar situation. After Moses’ death, he might have felt inadequate, but God told him to be strong and courageous, not to be afraid, because He would be with him. Faith requires courage, because God often calls us to move in ways that defy our logic.

The same is true for Peter when he walks on the water. As long as he keeps his eyes on Jesus, he overcomes fear and does the impossible. But as soon as he lets fear dominate, he begins to sink.

Fear immobilizes us, faith pushes us forward. Peter, that morning, chose to trust the word of Jesus more than his own experience. And his trust was rewarded with a miracle. The lesson is clear: if we want to see God's work in our lives, we must learn to overcome fear and walk by faith.

The Miracle Catch

Luke tells us about the extraordinary encounter between Jesus and the first disciples, especially Peter, during a strange fishing trip. After a fruitless night, Jesus asks Peter to cast his nets once more, despite experience to the contrary. The result is a miracle: a catch so abundant that the nets break. Peter, struck by the miracle, recognizes his unworthiness and prostrates himself before Jesus. Jesus calls him to follow him, transforming him from a fisherman of fish to a fisherman of men, inviting him to participate in the mission of bringing the kingdom of God into the world.
