The helmet of salvation
Without a head, you are definitely dead. I’m no doctor, but I do believe that the previous statement is scientifically true. You can survive with nine fingers or eight toes, but you can’t live without your one head. No wonder Paul, in preparing you for your next spiritual battle, writes, “Take the helmet of salvation” (Ephesians 6:17).
What does a helmet do? It is a stiff, hard, protective layer to guard one of the most vital and sensitive parts of your body. Bikers, baseball players, and rock climbers all strap on helmets because they treasure the only mind that God has given them.
In a similar way, the message of salvation protects the spiritual thoughts of your head. This message about Jesus is solid/unchanging, less like a flimsy cardboard “God loves me/God loves me not” and more like an unbreakable Kevlar guarantee: “God loves me!” When thoughts of guilt, shame, and condemnation (“How could I do that?” “Why did I say that?” “God must be so disgusted with me.”) threaten our minds, salvation deflects those deadly blows and protects us with the good news of the cross.
Your mind is too precious to waste on futile regrets of your past sins. So, Christian soldier, take the helmet of salvation, guard your mind in Christ Jesus, and know that you are safe because of the ultimate victory of our Warrior and Savior.
