Day 9: Desire

Read

Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you your heart’s desires. –Psalm 37:4

Connect

The search for a spouse doesn’t always go according to your plan.

Somebody you’d date in a heartbeat might not be into you. A relationship that starts with a spark might end with a heartbreak. Your love for a man or a woman may be unrequited. It happens.

And that hurts.

At first, it’s hard to have hope when it doesn’t look like you’ll get what you want. And it can feel impossible to imagine ever wanting anything else.

But when your plans fall through, God will use them to fulfill His.

Today’s verse says the Lord will give you your heart’s desires when you delight in Him. But what does that mean for people who seek God and still don’t get what they want?

It means that what God might actually give you is new desires.

As certain as you may be that what you want right now is right for you, God might have a different plan in mind for your future—something that today, you don’t want.

And if He wants you to want something else, there’s a reason. He sees what you can’t. He knows what you don’t—especially what’s best for you.

He didn’t create you to give yourself to somebody who doesn’t want you. He wants you to love and be loved. He loves you and is committed to making everything turn out well for you.

Pray

Thank You, Father, for the desires deep within me. What I desire more than anything is for my will to align with Yours. Grant me the grace to see what’s best for me, so that I can live out the purpose You’ve planned for my life.

Reflect

Have you ever experienced unrequited love? What was or would be the hardest part of loving somebody who doesn’t love you back?

While intimate relationships are designed to remind you of God’s love for you, living them out in a fallen world often results in wounds.
