Day 5: Let Down Your Net!

Scripture Focus:Now when He had left speaking, He said unto Simon, ‘Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught.’” (Luke 5:4, KJV)

The Call to Obedience

Apprehension is a common part of our faith journey–especially when we've done everything right but receive undesirable results. What do we do when things don't go our way after recognizing the press, committing to pursuing our purpose, prioritizing Kingdom business by leading others to the Source, and seizing the opportunity?

Peter experiences a similar circumstance in Luke 5. He had just finished a long, fruitless night of fishing. He was tired, discouraged, and ready to call it quits. Then, Jesus entered his boat and told him to “launch out into the deep” and let down his net. I bet this request felt impractical, even absurd, to an experienced fisherman like Peter. Yet, his response was key: “Nevertheless, at Thy word, I will let down the net.” (Luke 5:5 KJV)

Obedience to God often requires stepping outside our comfort zones to overcome our apprehensive moments. In those moments of surrender—when we trust God despite what we see—we position ourselves for a breakthrough.

The Deep is Where the Work Happens

The “deep” represents more than just a physical location; it’s the place where faith is tested and God’s power is revealed. It’s not in the safety of the shallow waters but in the deep, where we confront our doubts, fears, and inadequacies, that we see God’s glory. Matthew 14:22-33 describes another event when Jesus walks on the Sea of Galilee and invites Peter to join him on the water; however, Peter begins to sink due to fear of what is happening around him and doubt that he'll survive his circumstances.

In both circumstances, Peter admitted his efforts had failed, but he trusted Jesus’ authority. When we do the same, we invite God to work through us in ways we could never achieve on our own.

Moving from Apprehension to Action

Letting down your net or stepping into the deep waters isn't just about physical action; it’s about trust and surrender. Jesus doesn’t ask us to have it all figured out before we move. He simply calls us to follow His lead, trusting that He sees what we cannot. The fish that Peter eventually catches isn’t the result of Peter’s skill or timing; it is the result of Jesus’ divine authority.

This principle applies to our lives today. There may be areas where God is calling you to “let down your net”—to share your faith, take a leap in your career, start a ministry, or reconcile with someone. The question is: will you trust Him enough to act?

The Abundance of Obedience

The result of Peter's obedience was a catch so overwhelming that it broke his net and filled two boats to the point of sinking. This abundance wasn’t just for Peter—it blessed his partners, too! God’s blessings are meant to overflow, equipping us to bless others and advance His Kingdom.

Closing Thought

Jesus is calling us to “let down our nets.” It takes faith to obey, especially when we’re tired or unsure of the outcome. But when we trust Him, we experience His abundance—not just for ourselves but for those around us.

Let’s answer the call, trust His Word, and let down our nets!

Reflection Questions

  • What “deep” is God calling you to launch into?
  • Identify your “net”: What is God asking you to let down? Perhaps it’s a talent, resource, or an opportunity you’ve been hesitant to pursue. How can you let down your net in faith, even when it feels inconvenient or uncomfortable?
  • Who in your life could benefit from the overflow of God’s blessings in you?

Day 5 Key Takeaways

  1. God often calls you to step out of the shallows of comfort and into the deep of faith.
  2. Trust God’s timing and authority—even when the task feels inconvenient or impossible.
  3. The abundance God provides is meant to overflow, blessing you and those around you.
