Guiding Principles
Just as basketball has rules and principles that govern the game, the Christian life is guided by the teachings of Jesus—love, forgiveness, compassion, and integrity. As a Christian athlete, you are called not only to follow the rules and regulations but to do so in a way that glorifies God. Colossians 3:12 reminds us, “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.”
In basketball, organizations like the NBA expect players to exhibit sportsmanship, respect for officials and opponents, and adherence to the league's rules, while prioritizing player safety. Violations can lead to fines, technical fouls, or suspensions. Similarly, as believers, the moment you clothe yourself with the name of Christ, you represent not only yourself but also the faith you profess.
We know as athletes that putting on a jersey, especially one with your name on it, brings a natural sense of pride. It’s a powerful moment—representing your team, your skills, and your identity. While this pride can be motivating, it can also lead to actions or attitudes that don’t reflect love—for others, for God, or for His commandments. Our love for the game should never surpass our love for people or our devotion to God and His teachings.
Colossians 3:13-14 continues: “Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.” The way we live, both on and off the court, carries consequences far greater than any fines, fouls, or suspensions. There’s an eternal weight to how we conduct ourselves.
We are Jesus’s hands and feet—sometimes the only reflection of Him that others may ever encounter. Titus 2:7-8 emphasizes this responsibility: “In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us.”
Take time to reflect on how your actions align with these principles, both in the game and in life. Strive to live out your faith in a way that honors God and leaves a lasting impact on those around you.
Reflection:
- Do your actions reflect Christlike character in your daily life?
- Reflect on areas where you struggle to show compassion, kindness, humility, or forgiveness. How can you grow in those areas?
- Are you living in a way that honors God, setting an example for others both in word and deed?
