Day Six: The Word Which Is Watched
At this point in the devotional, we’ve gone through the process of understanding a little more about what the Word of God actually is and then how it can be applied to our everyday lives. Today for our final day, we’ll move a little more into what truly seals the deal.
1 John 5:14 says: “And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us.”
Something important to note though, is that when we pray ‘in accordance with His will’, we can be 100% certain that He hears. The best way to know God’s will is to study His Word.
This is great news, as we can so often find ourselves bewildered and uncertain of what to pray, and yet we know and trust that when we are praying in accordance with the Scriptures, God hears us and will respond. (The response we get though, is of course, up to Him!)
When called to do big things for the Kingdom, one of the continual words of encouragement from God to the men and women of the Bible is that He would be with them as they went. Not only do we see this in the Great Commission, which we’ve previously looked at, but we see it when individuals are called too. (Moses – Exodus 4:12 & Joshua – Joshua 1:9, for example.)
We too are called by God into our contexts and spheres of influence and it can sometimes be a little bewildering to feel as though we’re the ‘only ones’ or that we have no one to turn to for strength and support.
When Jeremiah is called to be a prophet to Israel, he too, may have felt this same pressure and vulnerability. This was no easy task (Jeremiah is often referred to as the ‘weeping prophet’) However, there’s some comfort found in Jeremiah 1:11-12:
“And the word of the LORD came to me, saying, “Jeremiah, what do you see?” And I said, “I see an almond branch.” Then the LORD said to me, “You have seen well, for I am watching over my word to perform it.”
When we feel the weight and heaviness of a particular calling we have been given to walk out, it shouldn’t cause us to despair, but rather to rejoice in the fact that this is not our doing and something we’ve materialized from our own desires, but rather that it’s God inviting us to partner in the fulfillment of His Word coming to pass.
Now, to clear up any confusion about why the mention of almonds takes place in this passage – the word ‘almond’ sounds like the Hebrew for ‘watching’, which of course we see supported in verse 12. Here, God tells Jeremiah that he’s not simply been called and appointed to a random mission, but rather that this is part of God’s bigger plan to see His Word fulfilled.
Knowing what we know now about the Word of God after going through this study should begin to enable us to realize or perhaps re-realize its power. It should remind us of the incredible reality which causes us to remember that God is continually with us in the presence of the Holy Spirit and on the pages of our Bibles. Not only that but as we’re commissioned by God to walk out the call on our life following His will, He is watching over us to see it take place.
