True Praise
Written by Joanna McGee Bradford
2 Samuel 6 verse 14 says, “Wearing a linen ephod, David was dancing before the LORD with all his might.”
Initially, many Black churches condemned music written by Thomas A. Dorsey (1899-1993), widely acknowledged as the father of gospel music. Beginning in Chicago in the early 1930s, Dorsey’s lively songs included clapping and stomping. But this new sound and approach was considered unrefined by ministers, musicians, and churchgoers. Yet Dorsey unashamedly persisted in his new style of worship, which has influenced both Black and White American music artists.
Dorsey’s life reminds me of King David’s story. When David led the assembly of Israelites returning the ark of the Lord to Jerusalem, he leaped and danced “with all his might.” Not everyone was pleased, however. His first wife, Michal, daughter of Saul, thought it was “vulgar.” In response, David said he was willing to look “even more undignified” and to humiliate himself further in celebrating before God. Just like Dorsey, David focused on worshiping God rather than the opinions of others. When we turn our focus on God, recalling His greatness and His deliverance, we, too, can reject the opinions of others and use our gifts to lift up God.
How often has someone’s view of us stood in the way of our worshiping God? We don’t all celebrate in the same manner. But when we do, whether in public or private, it should lift the name of God.
How do you worship God? Is anything holding you back from fully praising Him?
Let’s pray.
Dear God, please help me to fully and joyfully express to You the gratitude in my heart and soul.
Amen
