Rahab - Pursuing Personal Goals with Purpose

There are eight key areas that are critical to setting goals. The first one is labeled personal. While to many may seem selfish, it creates happiness and improves emotional well-being. I know that many people may not find Rahab, in the Book of Joshua as one one who set personal goals. Rahab’s story, found in Joshua 2 and Joshua 6, demonstrates her pursuit of personal goals that align with protecting her family, seeking deliverance, and aligning with God’s plan. Though she was a Canaanite and a woman of questionable reputation due to her occupation, Rahab exhibited remarkable faith and strategic thinking, showing how personal goals can lead to transformation and redemption.

Many would think that her occupation would exempt her from being a planner. However, it was evident in the scriptures that she wanted out of the lifestyle. In Joshua Chapter 2, Joshua sent out the spies to scout out Jericho. Their journey led them to the house of Rahab.

Rahab’s journey is a remarkable example of how pursuing a personal goal with purpose can transform not only your life but also your legacy. Though she was known for her occupation, her story shows that your past does not define your future when you decide to align your goals with God's plan.

Rahab lived in Jericho, a city destined for destruction, yet she had a desire stirring in her heart—a longing to know the true God. This personal goal became evident when she courageously set aside her agenda and took a bold step of faith. She sheltered Israelite spies, risking her life because she recognized the power and authority of the God of Israel.

Rahab wanted to know and serve the living God. Her faith-filled decision not only saved her and her family but also positioned her in the lineage of Jesus Christ (Matthew 1:5). Rahab’s actions reflected a deep desire to leave behind the life she had known and pursue something greater.

1. Identify the Personal Goals

Rahab’s goal was clear: she wanted to know the true God and align her life with His purpose. Her actions in protecting the Israelite spies demonstrated a deep personal conviction, a recognition of her need for God, and a desire to leave her old life behind.

Rahab wasn’t just moved by fear of what might happen to Jericho—she was motivated by a longing to be part of God’s greater plan. Personal goals rooted in faith often come from a place of conviction, an awareness of need, and a desire to live a life aligned with God’s will. Rahab’s story reminds us that even when we start from a broken or challenging place, faith can shape a vision that leads to transformation.

2. Seek God with Purpose

Before taking her bold step of faith, Rahab’s actions suggest a heart seeking after God. She heard of His mighty deeds, believed in His power, and made a choice to honor Him over her former life. Though the Bible doesn’t explicitly mention her fasting or praying, Rahab’s words to the spies reveal a heart aligned with faith: “For the Lord your God is God in heaven above and on the earth below” (Joshua 2:11).

Seeking God with intention is a vital part of goal setting. Like Rahab, we must pause to recognize His power and submit our plans to Him. This act of seeking creates a foundation that ensures our goals are not just personal ambitions but are spiritually grounded. When we intentionally align our goals with God’s purpose, we step into His plan with confidence. "By faith the prostitute Rahab, because she welcomed the spies, was not killed with those who were disobedient." – Hebrews 11:31

3. Take Initiative

Rahab didn’t stop at belief; she took bold action to protect the spies and declare her allegiance to God. She negotiated for the safety of her family, tied the scarlet cord in her window as instructed, and waited in faith for God to fulfill His promise. Rahab’s story shows us that personal goals require courage and decisive action.

Sometimes we hesitate, wondering if we’re ready or if the circumstances are perfect. Rahab reminds us that faith-filled initiative is a key part of achieving our goals. Whether it’s stepping out of our comfort zone, asking for help, or making a big change, taking action moves us closer to the vision God has placed on our hearts.

Rahab’s story challenges us to examine our own personal goals and step forward with purpose. It encourages us to seek to align them with God's purpose. When Rahab chose to pursue knowing God above all else, she used her faith to bring the greater plan to fruition for her family.

What personal goal is God calling you to pursue with purpose? Choose to set aside distractions and seek to know God more deeply. Let your goals reflect His work in your life, trusting that He will use them for His glory and your good. Just like Rahab, trust when you act in faith, God will honor your commitment and guide you toward success.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the example of Rahab, who pursued her goals with faith and boldness. Help me to recognize the goals You are calling me to pursue and give me the courage to seek You first in all things. Guide my steps and strengthen me to take action, trusting in Your plan for my life. Thank You for transforming my heart and giving me a vision for a life aligned with Your purpose. In Jesus’ name, Amen!
