The Bible OverBrew - Bible in a Yearنموونە
Week 10. Day 1. Joshua 1-2.
Introduction to Joshua.
Joshua recounts the entry of the people into the promised land. This is a direct fulfilment of God’s promises to Abraham in Gen 12:1-3.
More than this, the land is described as being very much a new Eden: it is a paradise land, and most importantly a place where God will dwell with his people and they will worship and serve him. As Hamilton puts it, ‘It is almost as though Israel has another chance at Eden.’ (God's Glory in Salvation through Judgment, 152)
But alongside this positive outlook, be on the lookout for negative notes, foreshadowing the book of Judges which is very negative.
Joshua 1-2.
As you read Joshua 1, notice God’s initiative. He is the one who is giving the land to the people (v2, 3, 6, 11, 13, 15)
1:5-9 God’s commission to Joshua.
- What does God promise Joshua?
- What does he command him to do?
In both of these aspects, Joshua foreshadows Jesus, who brings us into our heavenly inheritance.
Ch 2 Rahab. Why does she hide the spies?
Bonus: 2:18 The scarlet cord. Does this foreshadow the blood of Christ? What do you think? Is there any passover symbolism here?
NOTE: Days 1-5 of each week contain the scripture reading for that week. Day 6 has just the 'key chapters'. If you want a briefer version of this plan that still takes you through the whole Bible, you could just read the key chapters featured on day 6. Day 7 has the podcast video where we discuss the week's reading.
About this Plan
The Bible OverBrew is a friendly virtual book group, helping you read the Bible in big chunks, preferably with a mug of tea! Maybe you've tried to read through the Bible before, but gave up when it felt confusing or too intense? We are here to help you! We provide notes and questions to guide your reading, and note ‘key chapters’ if you don’t have time to read it all. In our podcast at the end of each week we draw out the key themes, and how it all points to Christ. We’d love you to join us!
