Purpose
Whether you are 18 years old or 100 years young, at some point or multiple times in your life you have asked the question “What is my purpose?”. What purpose did you put me on this earth for, Lord? What is it that you want me to do, accomplish, or complete? Maybe you are asking this question now and are in search of what you feel like God has called you to. Well, I hope after the next few minutes of looking into God’s word together, we can bring clarity to that question.
When we begin to dive into this scripture, we see something very interesting. We see that before Jesus was called to the cross, he was first called by God to be a servant. Seeing this shows us something very important- that our talents, job, or gift set is not what or where our purpose is found nor what dictates our purpose. God didn’t say “Well Jesus, since I have given you the ability and anointing to heal people and perform miracles, your purpose is going to be leading crusades of thousands of people. But what we see is God says first and foremost through everything you do, you will be a servant. How did Jesus serve? He served multiple ways. He fulfilled biblical prophecy, he healed people, he preached the gospel, and most importantly he shared God the Father with everyone he came into contact with. Everything that he did was to bring glory and honor to God. He was called to the cross but his purpose was to bring glory and honor to the father’s name, serving anyway he could and telling anyone who would listen about who he was and who his father was.
Where is our purpose found?
Your purpose is found in JESUS. Jesus even found his own purpose through the Father. We can’t find our purpose in our talents, abilities, or even our career. As a pastor I can’t find my purpose in preaching because I will never find complete fulfillment in preaching. But I will always find fulfillment in and through Jesus. Always remember our purpose is not what we do for a job or where our talents position us, it is always in Christ Jesus.
What is our purpose??
Our purpose is to bring glory and honor to the name of Jesus. Our purpose is to serve anyway we can that brings glory and honor to his name. Our purpose is to proclaim the gospel and bring glory and honor to Jesus’ name. Our purpose is to tell people about Jesus and bring glory and honor to him. The only reason the call that Jesus answered to die on the cross was so powerful was because through his servanthood, to bring glory and honor to his father’s name, he fulfilled Old Testament prophecy. His purpose brought power and authority to what he was called to.
Reflection Questions:
- Where have you been searching/looking for your purpose?
- What are you doing to serve God and others?
- What depth of love must it have taken for Jesus to leave his place in heaven to come down and serve and die for you?
Prayer:
God, we pray that in that everything we do, we bring Glory and Honor to your name. We know that you will reveal our calling over time but our purpose is something we can fulfill now, and we pray that in everything we do, we fulfill that purpose which is to bring glory and honor to you through our actions and words. That in everything we do, it is to bring a focus to you and light to who you are. Through our giftings, our jobs, our schools, wherever we may be or whatever we may be doing, we step into our purpose and honor you in everything. We ask this all in your name, Amen!
