Joshua completes the tribal allotment of land. Later, he gives his farewell address, leads the Israelites in a covenant renewal ceremony, and dies. Unfortunately, the period of the judges that followed Joshua’s successful leadership is characterized by disobedience, leading to external oppression. Early judges such as Deborah and Gideon both led successful military campaigns of deliverance, but the peace that followed was short-lived.
