New to Jesus?

DAY 1 OF 5

Who Is Jesus?

"Jesus answered, 'I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.'"

(John 14:6 NIV)

As we begin this devotional by reflecting on who Jesus is I would encourage you to journey through each day with a notepad and pen next to you. Write down any questions you may have about Jesus and be ready to take them to God in prayer, asking for understanding as you continue to explore who He is.

The first thing to note about Jesus, I believe, is that He is not just a historical figure – He is the Son of God. Now, this may be a lot to wrap your head around in the first instance, but it is the truth.

The purpose for Jesus coming to earth was to show us the way to a relationship with God. We will get into more of the why He came to earth tomorrow, but for now let us settle on the truth that Jesus is one part of the 3-part expression of God – also known as the Trinity.

Jesus Christ is also the only path to God and eternal life. In our highlight scripture from John 14 you can see that Jesus Himself confesses to be the only way to Father God. It is by accepting Him into your life that you are reconnected to your Creator – God – and able to live the abundant life that is promised in the book of John (chapter 10, verse 10).

Getting to know Jesus is the first step in your journey of faith.

It can often be our pride that gets in the way of us accepting Jesus. We don’t want to submit to receiving a free gift of salvation when there are other religions and schools of thought that require us to work for our faith. We want to feel like we’ve earned it, like we deserve it – then and only then will we accept it.

This is not so with Jesus. We must understand that He is the epitome of grace and that we cannot earn His love and salvation. He died a criminal’s death on a rugged cross so that we can freely receive the free gift of salvation in Him alone.

He is our Saviour.

Jesus isn’t just one option among many; He is central to the Christian faith. To know the Father, you must go through the Son and to know the Father is to be reconnected to your Creator.

So, who is Jesus?

He is the Son of God.

He is the only way to the Father, God.

He is Grace and Truth.

He is the Saviour of mankind.

Let’s pray.

Father God,

I want to know who Jesus is. Please help me understand His role in my life and what it means to follow Him. Thank you for sending Him to earth to show me the way to reconnect with You. Help me to journey with Jesus well and become a mature and fully surrendered follower of Christ.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.
