The Holy Spirit Explained - Part I

DAY 3 OF 6

The Holy Spirit’s Consistent Work in Salvation

God’s Grace touches every aspect of life—whether through the Church, the moral order, or even advancements in human culture. The Holy Spirit works within and among us. But beyond His general blessings, the Holy Spirit has always played a crucial role in Salvation, even in the Old Testament.

The Day of Pentecost is often celebrated as a pivotal moment in the Work of the Holy Spirit, but it wasn’t the beginning of His involvement in Redemption. The disciples, and even the Old Testament saints, had already experienced the Spirit’s Transformative Work. One of the most significant ways the Spirit was at work is through Regeneration.

Regeneration, or the New Birth, is essential for anyone to enter the Kingdom of God. This wasn’t a new concept introduced by Jesus; it was a continuation of what God had been doing all along. In John 3, when Jesus speaks with Nicodemus, He explains that a person must be Born Again to see the Kingdom of God. Nicodemus, a teacher of Israel, should have already understood this. Why? Because the Spirit’s Work of turning hearts toward God was not new; it was consistent with how God had always operated.

The Bible tells us that left to ourselves, we are blind, deaf, and dead in our sins. We cannot, and will not, turn to God on our own. Regeneration is necessary because it is through this New Birth that God gives us the ability to repent, believe, and understand the Truth. This was true for the Old Testament saints, just as it is for us today.

The Hand of God— through His Spirit—was at work among His people, turning their hearts to respond in obedience. This is what the Holy Spirit does. He turns the hearts of men and women toward God and enables them to receive and act on His Truth. This Divine Work was not limited to New Testament times; it was present throughout the Old Testament as well.

The Spirit's Work also empowers believers to live out their faith. The same Spirit who moved in the hearts of the Old Testament saints is at work in you today. Take time to acknowledge the Spirit’s role in your spiritual journey, and seek His Empowerment to live out your faith fully. Today, ask God to help you to be more receptive to the Holy Spirit’s Leading, allowing Him to guide your thoughts, decisions, and actions.
