Faith in Action

DAY 6 OF 9

As leaders, we often find ourselves in the crosshairs of expectations, whether from our teams, our congregations, or our communities. The weight of seeking approval can feel suffocating, leading us to chase after validation like a mirage in the desert. We may even find ourselves caught in a comparison trap, measuring our worth against the achievements and accolades of others. This can foster feelings of guilt, condemnation, and insecurity, creating a cycle that distracts us from our true purpose.

In Galatians 1:10, Paul poses a critical question that challenges our motives: Are we seeking the approval of people or God? This is a pivotal inquiry for anyone in leadership. When our self-worth is tied to human validation, we may compromise our values, stretch our integrity, and ultimately lose sight of our calling.

The Approval Addiction

The approval addiction stems from a desire to be liked and accepted. As leaders, we may feel pressure to conform to the expectations of those around us. However, when our identity is rooted in the opinions of others, we risk becoming unanchored and vulnerable to the whims of societal approval. This can manifest as people-pleasing behavior, where we prioritize the satisfaction of others over our own God-given mission.

Question for Reflection:

What are the areas in your leadership where you find yourself seeking approval? Are there specific individuals or groups whose validation you crave?

The Comparison Trap

The comparison trap is another insidious tactic that can derail our leadership. Social media and the constant visibility of others' successes can lead us to feel inadequate. We may look at others' accomplishments and think, "If only I had that," or "Why can't I achieve what they have?" In doing so, we forget that God has uniquely equipped each of us for our own journey.

2 Corinthians 10:12 (NIV): "We do not dare to classify or compare ourselves with some who commend themselves. When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are not wise."

Paul reminds us that comparing ourselves to others is not only unwise but also detrimental to our spiritual and emotional well-being. As leaders, we must focus on our own growth and the unique calling God has placed on our lives.

Breaking Free

Breaking free from the approval addiction and comparison trap requires intentionality and a deep-rooted understanding of our identity in Christ. We are not defined by others' perceptions or achievements but by the love and grace of God.

Practical Steps:

  1. Seek God’s Approval: Spend time in prayer and Scripture, asking God to reveal your identity in Him. Reflect on His love for you, which is unconditional and unwavering.
  2. Set Healthy Boundaries: Limit exposure to sources that trigger feelings of inadequacy, whether that's particular social media platforms or certain relationships.
  3. Celebrate Others: Shift your focus from comparison to celebration. Acknowledge the achievements of others without feeling threatened. This cultivates an atmosphere of encouragement rather than competition.
  4. Accountability: Surround yourself with fellow leaders who can provide encouragement and hold you accountable in your journey to break free from the approval addiction.
  5. Practice Gratitude: Regularly reflect on your own journey and progress. Write down what you are thankful for in your leadership and the unique gifts God has given you.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the unique calling You have placed on each of our lives. Help us to seek Your approval above all else and to recognize our worth in Your eyes. Forgive us for the times we have allowed the need for validation to overshadow our purpose. May we break free from the chains of comparison and embrace our identity as Your beloved children. Strengthen us as leaders to inspire others without losing sight of our own path. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

As leaders, we are called to set an example for others, not just in our actions, but in our identities as well. By breaking the approval addiction and the comparison trap, we can lead with authenticity, grace, and unwavering confidence in the purpose God has for us. Let us strive to be servants of Christ, anchored in His approval and empowered to lead with love and integrity.
