Made New: An Ephesians Book Study

DAY 3 OF 30

In Ephesians 1:11-14, Paul dives into more detail regarding our redemption and gifts in Christ. He emphasizes the will and power of God at work to accomplish our salvation. When Paul uses words like predestined, purpose, or guarantee, he is not focusing on the “how” of being saved. He is focusing on the end result of salvation. In the end, nothing can stop God’s purposes from being accomplished. It will affect the individual (v. 13), the community (v. 11), the present, and the future (v. 14). We can trust and hope in that because we have been given the Holy Spirit.

Sometimes in our lives, we get something that lets us know we belong. Sometimes, it’s a jersey or a uniform that reminds you that you’re on the team. Sometimes, you get a badge or a key. You might get a ring or change your name when you get married. Bikers have bells or patches. I’m a Cubs fan, so when I see another person wearing Cubs gear, I know we share a collective affection for the same baseball team. As soon as we become Christians, the Holy Spirit is in us and reminds us that we are “in Jesus.” We are saved. We belong.

Paul emphasizes that what we have received is ultimately “for the praise of His glory” (v.12). We are not chosen because of anything we have done or will do, nor are we chosen solely for our individual benefit. Our salvation, blessing, and eternity bring honor and recognition to God. This isn’t because God needs or demands praise. It’s because it is both appropriate and how more people hear about the good news of Jesus. A lesser example would be the recommendation of a great restaurant or show. You might talk it up to your friends because it was that good and you want them to know about it. Similarly, that’s what our lives are like when we praise God.

Response
1. Was there a time when you knew you had been welcomed into a group or community? How did that make you feel?

2. How does knowing you are going to receive God’s complete inheritance impact your life?

3. Write a prayer asking God to make your life “for the praise of His glory.” This might include confession or asking God for a miraculous breakthrough.

Weekly Memory Verse
"Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. For He chose us in Him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in His sight."
