Blessing in the City
“If you obey the voice of the Lord your God, blessed shall you be in the city.” (Deuteronomy 28:2-3)
The urban landscape is brimming with stress, and those who navigate its streets daily feel the weight of its demands. It's a place teeming with noise, activity, and relentless hustle; its trials, losses, and anxieties are abundant. However, entering this realm with divine blessing dulls the sharpness of its challenges; dwelling there with that blessing brings satisfaction in its tasks and strength to meet its demands.
A blessing in the city may not elevate our status, but it will preserve our integrity; it may not lead to wealth, but it will uphold our honesty. Whether we're laborers, office workers, managers, merchants, or public officials, the city presents us with opportunities for service. Just as it's fruitful to fish where there are abundant shoals, it's promising to serve our Lord amidst bustling crowds. While we might have a preference for the tranquility of rural life, if we're called to the urban environment, we can embrace it knowing there's ample space for our talents and efforts.
Today, let's anticipate good things because of this promise, and let our priority be to listen attentively to the voice of the Lord and to act promptly on His commands. Blessings follow obedience. As Psalm 19 says, “In keeping His commandments, there is great reward.”
