BE THE MAN WHO SPEAKS UP
As Mr. Smith stood to speak about greed and corruption, some thought he was foolishly throwing away his political career. Others worked overtime to push him over the edge. A few, however, stood in his corner, knowing his efforts might prove futile yet strongly hoping his words would be heard. Perhaps Mr. Smith could do what no one had yet been able to do. If this story sounds familiar, that’s because it’s the plot of the classic movie Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, starring Jimmy Stewart as the title character. You too have a certain amount of influence, large or small, wherever you go. It takes guts to speak up for others, especially when you feel no one else is listening. It’s always easier, after all, to just stay silent. However, for those misunderstood, mistreated, poverty-stricken souls, your voice may be the only hope in sight. These opportunities aren’t just limited to social programs—everyone, including you, has an opportunity to change a life. When you speak for those who lack a voice, new friendships start to form, leading to new opportunities to share God’s life-changing message of salvation. That opportunity can change eternity for someone in need. Maybe that’s why you’re here—people need to know that God has sent help.
Do you feel uncomfortable speaking up for those who have no voice? If so, how can you change your outlook by identifying with those in need?
