Exiles: A Study in 1 Peter

DAY 4 OF 28

These passages here in 1 Peter should serve to us as a humble reminder of the true reality of our situations. Ultimately, we will be judged by God and because of that we should conduct ourselves with fear (v 17). This doesn’t mean fear, like oh we should be scared of God because He is bad. No, quite the opposite. He is so good and so Holy that we should have a reverent fear of Him. Because when all of our lives eventually end, He is the One sitting on the throne and He is the ultimate judge. And then in v 18, Peter reminds us that we were basically bought out of our sin and darkness, and not by silver or gold, no, by something so much more valuable. We were bought by the blood of Jesus Christ, as the lamb without blemish (v19). This, friends, should give us so much hope. And that’s ultimately how this passage ends. Peter reminds us that this salvation is found in Jesus and our faith and our hope should be in God. These scriptures remind us that because we were bought with a price, that being the blood of Jesus, we should pursue holiness. God will be the ultimate judge, but because of Jesus we now have hope, we now have salvation, and we now have a way out of darkness.

About this Plan

Exiles: A Study in 1 Peter

Exclusion can be wounding. This was not a foreign concept to the audience of 1 Peter. As followers of Jesus, this book reshapes our understanding of what it means to live from the overflow of hope in Christ as we live as exiled people in an increasingly hostile society.
