What to Pray for Your Children

DAY 14 OF 16

What to pray for your children

How to pray for your unsaved, prodigal, or wayward child (1)

Many parents are in agony about their prodigal son or daughter! Many are struggling with feelings of failure and regret. Many cannot forgive themselves. Others are filled with hopelessness, anger, and bitterness and may have hearts that do not want to forgive. Many hardened their hearts to their prodigal child. Some mothers cry genuine tears for their children. These parents experience unthinkable amounts of pain.

May the following remarks help you in your struggle.

1. All children have a choice to follow God or reject him. This is not a very encouraging word, but it is nevertheless true.

2. All children have a sinful nature and are responsible for their sins, sinful choices, and behaviour. In many cases, we can see how certain circumstances played a role in their rejection of God and their parents. Circumstances are often just too difficult, unfair, and full of hypocritical behaviour from authority figures for many children and young people. Ultimately, however, every sinful behaviour is their own choice, and they are accountable for it.

3. There comes a time when parents must stop talking, reprimanding, preaching, and pointing out all the wrong things. There comes a time when keeping silent is the only way to move forward. Always keep 2 Peter 3:9 before you: "The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise as some understand slowness, but is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish but everyone to come to repentance."

4. God is not intimidated by your prodigal child's sin. God created them and knows how to deal with them.

Parents want to pray for their children but may not always know how and for what. They might pray with wrong attitudes, hindering prayers and leading to disappointment and unbelief. This Reading Plan provides guidelines and Scripture on how to pray.
