Day 4: Receiving Financial Healing

God wants to give us abundant life, a life full of God’s goodness. Yet, often our childhood and adult experiences include hurt, trauma, learned bad habits, lies we have internalized, and other challenges that hold us back. While we can’t undo the past, we can go to God for healing and transformation.

When we go to the doctor, we are asked for our family medical background, our own medical background, and our current symptoms. Financially, our childhood money memories show us some of our family medical background; our own financial experiences relate to our personal medical background; and then we identify our current symptoms… level of debt, current lifestyle, spending patterns, savings, etc. As the doctor goes a level deeper to find a pathway to healing there are some additional questions:

What financial lies have you internalized over the years? For healing, these can be replaced with God’s truth from scripture. For example:

Lie: “I can’t”

Truth: “I can do all this through him who gives me strength” (Philippians 4:13).

Lie: “I will never have enough.”

Truth: “I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty” (Philippians 4:11-12).

Lie: “I need more wealth to find security.”

Truth: “I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust’ (Psalm 91:2).

What strongholds or addictions may be holding you back in your financial journey? Replace each one with a spiritual discipline that starts your healing process. For example:

Shopping addiction: Start making a gratitude list of at least five things you are thankful for each day.

Fear: Journal and pray, confessing to God your fear, and asking God for strength.

Approval seeking: Read scriptures that remind you of God’s love for you.

Gambling, drugs, or alcohol addiction: Find a sponsor and join a recovery group that allows you to practice confession and find support from others on the journey with you.

As you spend time discerning the roots beneath your symptoms, invite God as the Great Physician to reveal the truth, to uncover the lies and strongholds keeping you in prison, and to bring you to a place of healing.

Reflection Questions:

What lies have you internalized that are negatively impacting your finances? What are one or two scripture verses that replace each one with God’s truth?

What strongholds or addictions are holding you back financially? Pick a spiritual discipline for each one that you will start to practice.

Prayer

God, you are the Great Physician. I can’t do this on my own. Please search my heart and show me the lies I have internalized. Replace each one with your truth. Show me the strongholds and addictions holding me back, and set me free by the power of your Holy Spirit. Show me the healthy practices to begin now to draw me closer to you. All I have is yours. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
