Jesus Through Us: Following His Example in Love and Service

DAY 2 OF 7

A Life That Shines

Light from a lamp doesn’t just shine—it brightens a room, illuminating the dark corners, preventing us from hurting ourselves, and giving us perspective for our surroundings. Yet in order to illuminate an area, light has to be brought into that space and shined into the darkness. A light that doesn’t shine can’t fulfill its purpose. And a light that is covered can only illuminate the people closest to it.

The hope, the wonderful message we have, isn’t meant to be sequestered away, only available to the few already in the know. Extending beyond your comfort zone, getting out into the world so others can see your light, is vital. Yet it requires you to leave your bubble and make new friends, do new things that pull you out of your routine, and be open and loving even when it’s hard.

If we are not out in the world, shining our light, who will bring light to those still living in darkness, to people who’ve lost their way, who can’t find the way out? Who will bring them hope? Your life is the example. Your words, your heart, your love for others is all part of God’s light. How you shine is important.

In what ways can the characteristics of light and its function be compared to Christians and their role in the world?

How can others see God’s light shining through your life? What could you do to make your light be visible to more people?

Jesus, You are the Light of the World. Help me to shine in a way that honors You and represents You. Help me to bring light to dark places, hope to hurt people, and love to those who are different from me. In Your name, amen.
