What Do You Want From Me?نموونە
Where We’re Going
Even after experiencing the goodness of God firsthand, it’s possible to lose sight of His grace and mercy. Peter, one of Jesus’ most passionate followers, walked away from his Savior after Jesus’ unjust arrest. In a state of despair, Peter went back to what was most familiar to him—fishing.
After Jesus’ death on the cross and eventual resurrection, He met Peter in his shame, forgave his betrayal, and called him to a deeper level of surrender.
In the “What Do You Want From Me?” Bible study, we’re going to take a closer look at John chapter 21 and discover five things Jesus wants from His followers:
1) Humility (John 21:1-8)
2) Time (John 21:9-14)
3) Love (John 21:15-17)
4) Boldness (John 21:18-19)
5) Contentment (John 21:20-25)
Prayerfully, this study will serve as a reminder for faithful disciples of Jesus as well as a roadmap for those seeking a deeper relationship with Him!
How To Be Humble
1) Own Your Flaws
Peter’s introduction to Jesus in Luke 5 was very similar to their interaction in John 21:1-8. Two separate nights of unsuccessful fishing were followed by two instances of miraculous provision. In both cases, Jesus asked if Peter’s crew had caught any fish, and both times they were empty-handed and acknowledged their failure. The first step to humility is owning the fact that we are imperfect people who are in need of a Savior!
2) Listen To Feedback
After a long, disappointing night, these fishermen listened to Jesus and lowered their net on the right side of the boat. Their willingness to hear and obey ultimately led to His divine provision. Humility requires a willingness to receive instruction from God, as well as those He places in our path.
3) Remember God’s Forgiveness
When Peter witnessed the miraculous catch of fish, he realized that Jesus must have risen from the grave. Swallowing his pride, Peter dove into the water and swam to his Savior. When we truly take time to consider the magnitude of the forgiveness Jesus purchased for us on the cross, total surrender is the only natural response!
Big Idea
Following Jesus requires humility, and humility requires us to own our flaws, listen to feedback, and remember God’s forgiveness!
Let's Think About This
Question #1: What is one thing that “jumped out” to you while reading John 21:1-8?
Question #2: Which of the three components of humility (owning your flaws, listening to feedback, and remembering God’s forgiveness) resonates the most with you?
Question #3: Can you identify an area of your life where pride is present? What steps can you take to walk in humility?
