Know for Certain: Answers for Those Who Doubt (Vol. 2)

DAY 3 OF 4

"Is There One God or Three?"

Many people find the concept of God being one God, yet three distinct persons, difficult to grasp. As today’s video states, “His holy nature is a mystery. Scripture reveals enough about God’s nature that we can begin to understand it.” No human illustration can fully define God; it can merely help us as we seek to understand Him.

God is a triune God, and each Person of the Trinity is the same in essence; each is fully God in all His Glory. Each Person is distinctive in His roles and in the way He relates to the others within the Trinity. God is in perfect relationship within Himself; He does not need anything or any other created being. He is completely self-sufficient. Because He is a loving God, He created us to be in relationship with one another, and He invites us into a relationship with Himself. Just as the Father, Son and Holy Spirit exist in relationship with one another within the God-head, so we as Christ followers are to exist in relationship with Him.

Scripture states that as followers of Jesus, we can call God our heavenly Father forever. He adopts us into His family, and we can know Him intimately as “Abba, Father” (“Abba” is the affectionate Aramaic term for “daddy”). If God is now our Father, then we are also considered brothers and sisters of Jesus. We belong to the holy family of God. The moment we become part of God’s family by faith, He dwells within each of us through His Holy Spirit, the third Person of the Trinity. While the Holy Spirit guides us in truth, and comforts and helps us, He also makes us sure that we know we are God’s children.

Embracing the concept of the Trinity can be challenging, but God has revealed Himself to us through His Son Jesus, through His Holy Scriptures and through His Spirit living within us; because of these revelations, we can know for certain that we follow one God with three distinct Persons.
