Daily Bible Reading—March 2024, God’s Guiding Word: Prayer

DAY 16 OF 31

March 16

Introduction

Esther 9:20–32: Today’s reading describes the origin of the festival of Purim, an annual celebration to commemorate the triumph of the Jewish people over their enemies. Mordecai, Esther’s cousin, who had become a high official in the king’s court, writes a letter to all the Jews with instructions for observing the festival.

Today’s Key Verse: Esther 9:22b

They were told to observe these days with feasts and parties, giving gifts of food to one another and to the poor.

Reflect

Purim is still celebrated by Jews around the world today, normally in early March. It is preceded by a day of fasting. The festival gets its name from “purim,” the Babylonian term for the lots that were used to determine the day on which the Jews were to be killed. Instead, the Jews survived and their enemies were destroyed. What were Mordecai’s instructions for the celebration (verses 20–23)? Verses 24–28 provide a summary of the events that led to this commemoration. What reason is given? What events are remembered and celebrated within your community of faith?

Pray

Almighty God, eternal is your reign. Thank you for your steadfast love and faithfulness. Daily will I praise you and glorify your holy name. Amen.

Tomorrow’s Reading

Psalm 22: A cry of anguish and a song of praise.
