Sabbath: The Rest of It

DAY 5 OF 5

Day Five: Living from Sabbath

As believers in Jesus, living out God’s purpose for our lives means observing the Sabbath in ways that will grow our faith.

Over the last few days, we’ve had the chance to explore what Sabbath really means and why it’s such an important and powerful gift from our creator.

We now know that Sabbath is not just a day; it’s a discipline.

It's more than binge-watching Netflix on our day off. It's deeper than sleeping in on a Saturday and then racing off to run errands. It's a rest that reaches our souls.

So, according to God’s design, how should we observe the Sabbath?

  1. Connect purpose to it. Intentionally dig into God’s Word during your Sabbath, and use it as a time to point your heart and focus back on Him. The scripture passages in this study are a great place to start.
  2. Make it a priority. Plan your Sabbath ahead of time. What activities do you want to include? What time will you set aside for worship and rest? How will you spend time with family and friends?
  3. Set aside time for worship and rest. This could involve attending church, reading the Bible, praying, or going for a long walk.
  4. Choose God-honoring, soul-refreshing activities. Whether you spend time with family and friends or practice a favorite hobby, ask yourself, “Is this restful?” Choose activities that help you connect with God and remind you of His goodness. Take a break from work and the things you normally do during the week.

As you go throughout your week, remember God has given you rest. But it requires discipline and trust to believe God can take care of us, even when we cease to work.

Take some time now to mark the Sabbath on your calendar and plan activities for the weeks ahead. Invite your church group, family members, or a close friend to join in and practice it along with you.

There's no better time than now to make space in your life for Sabbath—to take moments to be still, let go of the constant need for control, and experience real rest.
