Daily Bible Reading — December 2023, God’s Saving Word: Joyنموونە
December 20
Introduction
Isaiah 66:1–24: Today’s reading is the concluding chapter of Isaiah. It is in the form of an oracle about worship. The passage speaks against those who worshiped the LORD with outward acts yet chose to do what is evil. The LORD promises to restore Jerusalem and help those who obey him.
Today’s Key Verse: Isaiah 66:1a
The LORD says, “Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool.”
Reflect
Today’s reading refers to the earth as the LORD’s footstool in a verse also quoted by the first Christian martyr, Stephen, in Acts 7:49. What does this image suggest about God and God’s relationship to creation? (The “house” in verse 1 refers to the Temple in Jerusalem, which was being rebuilt.) According to verse 2, with whom is the LORD pleased? Reread verses 10–14. How is the restoration of Jerusalem described? In what ways do your worship practices demonstrate your faithfulness and trust in God? For what will you rejoice today?
Pray
Sovereign God, heaven is your throne, and the earth is your footstool. I come to your throne of grace with a humble and repentant heart. Teach me to obey you and keep me faithful, trusting in your promises and rejoicing in your love and salvation. In your holy name, I pray. Amen.
Tomorrow’s Reading
Luke 1:1–25: The birth of John the Baptist is announced.
