Tamar
Impossible! Not a chance! It's never going to happen! Have you ever been in a situation where thoughts like those keep coming at you, and you feel trapped? I'm sure Tamar must have felt the same way. In her time, being a widow and sent back to her father's house wasn't like it is now. Her health, welfare, and ability to meet basic needs depended on her being part of a family unit and having children to support her as she grew older.
Was her destiny to become a slave or worse? With her first husband gone, his brother cheating her, and now her husband's family betraying and rejecting her, Tamar's future looked bleak! However, Tamar foresaw an opportunity to redeem what she had stolen from her, but it involved an incredible risk that could cost her own life. I can't imagine what was going through Tamar's mind that day when she heard Judah was coming and knew what she had to do.
Sometimes, God's plans don't make sense to us, but it is incredible what He does when we trust Him and step out in faith. Tamar showed this faith, great wisdom, and creativity in overcoming her desperate situation. I believe Tamar is highlighted in the lineage of Jesus because she dared to step out in faith instead of drowning in self-pity. Her faith opened the door to great blessing, not only to herself but to all those who would follow after her. (Ruth 4:12)
