The Lord's Prayer (The Model Prayer)

DAY 8 OF 9

The Bible teaches us in James 1 that God does not tempt anyone. So this may seem like an odd request that God not “bring us into temptation.” God does not tempt us, but in many instances, He does allow us to face temptation. Job was tempted to curse God. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were tempted to commit idolatry. Even Jesus was tempted in the wilderness.

While we do not have all the answers about why God allows what He does, the Lord’s Prayer can help us see how to address these moments in prayer. First of all, we should ask God to keep us out of tempting situations in the first place. He is capable. He is sovereign. We will never know on this earth how many times God has protected us from something, completely without our knowledge.

Secondly, we should pray that when we are tempted, God will deliver us. We actually find that very promise in 1 Corinthians 10:13, which says, “No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to humanity. God is faithful, and He will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation He will also provide a way of escape so that you are able to bear it.” As Christians, we must claim this promise, and trust that He is able to keep it. What temptation are you struggling with today? Take it to the Lord in the prayer.
