Out of Darkness

DAY 4 OF 6

How Should I Respond to My Pain?

Years ago, a couple that my wife Jennifer and I are close to tragically lost their oldest son after a battle with cancer. That’s one of the toughest situations any family could go through—but amid their pain, they pressed into relationships. They turned to God for strength… they turned to one another… and they turned to the Body of Christ. They didn’t turn on one another. Today, part of their life message is encouraging families to overcome during painful seasons.

You see, when pain comes on the scene, the enemy is usually not far behind—he exploits our wounds and fears in an attempt to isolate us. The Apostle Peter addresses suffering in 1 Peter 3:8 by writing, "Finally, all of you be of one mind, having compassion for one another; love as brothers, be tenderhearted, be courteous…"

Peter starts with a strong encouragement, “Be of one mind,” speaking to the importance of staying in relationship, unified with one another. Friend, staying in unity in your relationships is one of the keys to finding strength through suffering. Scripture is clear—we are one Body, and we’re called to do life together.

If your life is hurting right now—perhaps there’s been a deep disappointment in your family, or you’re struggling at work—whatever the reason, I want to encourage you that you’re not alone. Not only is God with you, but He’s faithful to surround you with family and community as you diligently seek Him in prayer. Friend don’t give up!

As you engage with God’s word:

● What is God saying to you?

● What does it mean to you?

● What action step do you need to take?

After you reflect on these questions, bring everything to God in prayer.
