Purpose Blocker #2 - Self Reliance
You were created on purpose, for a purpose
Purpose Blockers work against us and can stop us from achieving our purpose if we are not proactive in identifying and overcoming them. On Day Two, we discussed the Purpose Blocker of fear. Today, we will discuss another blocker that hinders our journey to our purpose -- Self-Reliance.
Self-Reliance
One of the biggest impediments to achieving purpose, even for believers, is over-reliance on ourselves. We think we can do what God has called us to do by ourselves. Not true! Purpose requires partnership, and we are God's partners in carrying out His plans for the world.
21 The eye cannot say to the hand, "I don't need you!" And the head cannot say to the feet, "I don't need you!" 22 On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable 1 Cor. 12:21-22 (NIV)
God created us for purpose and on purpose; interdependent, not independent. God had Jesus, and Esther had Mordecai. Paul had Timothy, and Peter had John Mark. In Acts 8:30-40, The Ethiopian eunuch had Phillip. In 1 Kings, Elijah had Elisha. In 2 Kings, Elisha had Gehazi in Matthew 28:19-20 Jesus had the disciples. And since I'm a fan of his, Michael Jordan had Scottie Pippen (Chicago Bulls).
Who do you have? And who has you? Note that you can play either role in a partnership - the receiver or the giver. The mentor or the mentee. Are you trying to accomplish your purpose on your own? It's not possible. Once you are clear on your goal, it will help you determine who your partner or partners should be. To identify trusted, helpful partners, think about who in your life currently supports your ideas and seeks to encourage you. You may not have realized it, but perhaps these are the people God has placed in your life to assist you in fulfilling your unique purpose.
Talk It Over
Do you know your purpose?
Who are your partners in purpose?
Do you need other partners?
Prayer
Father, help me to remember that we are one body with many members (1 Cor. 12:12-27). You did not create us to do your work alone. In Jesus' name, I pray, Amen.
