"Take Rest" - What a Well
Jesus said, “Everyone who drinks from this water will get thirsty again. But whoever drinks from the water that I will give him will never get thirsty again. In fact, the water I will give him will become a well of water springing up in him for eternal life.” - John 4:13 -14
Finish this sentence: “My life would be so much better if I could just ______________.” This idea resonates will all of us, no matter how we choose to complete the thought. We think our problems would be solved if we could just get a new job, win the lottery, fall in love, retire, get our kids on the right track, or get away for a week of vacation.
The woman Jesus met at the well in John 4 might have thought, “My life would be so much better if I could just start over in a new town.” Or maybe she thought her situation would improve if she could find a husband who would really love her. But Jesus wanted her to think deeper, and He used the water she gathered at the well together there.
No earthly circumstance can offer us the contentedness and peace we want. The woman would keep coming back to the well for water, but she wouldn’t stop getting thirsty. It’s the same for us. All of us are desperately thirsty. We all long to be satisfied, but we often look in the wrong places. When we reach our earthly goals, we realize they don’t actually give us the rest our souls long for. No earthly thing has that power, only Jesus does.
Jesus stands before us to offer us Himself. Will you take Him up on that offer? You can find true rest in Him. He alone has the living and life-giving water you need to be fully cleansed and fully satisfied in Him.
1) Listen to Kelontae Gavin’s “Take Rest.” What lyrics stand out to you as particularly encouraging? Which stand out to you as most challenging?
2) In what situation are you desperate to taste the living water only Jesus can provide? Where have you been looking to other things to satisfy you, even though they keep falling short?
3) Pray and ask for the living water from Jesus. Ask Him to draw you closer to Him as you take rest in Him.
