THE TRUEST THING ABOUT YOU
When you are asked, “Who are you?”, there may be many different answers that come to mind. For some, the answer may be your current job position, relationship status, or what you love to do for fun, or perhaps you would answer by saying who you are not. While all of these thoughts may be true, they all fall short of being the truest thing about who you are.
The truest thing about you is not your feelings or your personality type, as helpful as those things may be. The truest thing about you is what God says about you. When we rightly see ourselves through how He defines us, then all of the secondary ways in which we would answer that question come under the submission of our Creator.
The Bible says in Galatians 4:4-7, “But when the right time came, God sent his Son, born of a woman, subject to the law. God sent him to buy freedom for us who were slaves to the law, so that he could adopt us as his very own children. And because we are his children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, prompting us to call out, “Abba, Father.” Now you are no longer a slave but God’s child. And since you are his child, God has made you his heir.”
This is the good news of the Gospel! We have been redeemed by Jesus, and through a relationship with Him, we inherit His positional righteousness. You are no longer a slave but you are a son or a daughter of God and since you are His child then you are also an heir. It is by grace that we have been saved, our identity is not defined by what we have done, but by our faith in Jesus. The fact that you are a son/daughter to the King of Kings is the most actual thing about you. Your identity is found in Him! Before a profession or a marital status defines you God defines you as His child.
Application/Reflection Questions:
- How have you defined your identity before Christ?
- Are there any lies that you believed about your identity if so, what were they?
- What is the truth that God wants to replace those lies with?
Prayer: God, I thank You for loving me. Thank You for calling me Yours. Thank You for sending Jesus to live a perfect life, to die on the cross for me, and for raising Him from the dead to make all things new. You are so kind. I may not understand everything, but I give You my yes and fully surrender as Your child and joyfully call You Lord of my life. Help me continue to grow as a follower of Jesus and let me look more and more like You. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen!
