Training a dog is often called obedience training. You learn how to work with your dog, to teach it to obey commands. You give instructions and your dog listens and responds. How do we know someone is truly listening? When they respond to what is said.

When God speaks, we should be wise, we should listen and obey. Don’t just hear what God’s Word says, do what it says.

We can learn to listen to God by spending time with Him. We get to know what God’s voice sounds like when we get to know His character and who He is. When you hear someone call out to you, if you know them and you know their voice, you recognise it. When a parent at a busy park hears their child call out, “Dad!”, how do they know it’s their child and not another child saying, “Dad”. They know the sound of their child’s voice, they know them and know what they need.

God knows us, He knows what we need. When we call out to Him, He’s listening and when we know His voice, we know we can follow. Get to know God’s voice through reading His Word, praying and spending time with Him.
