Amnon's Repulsion
Our story continues: Amnon ignored the wise rebukes of Tamar, cruelly forced himself on her, and suddenly three things died.
First, the relationship between Amnon and Tamar died. Amnon represents many a young man in the twenty-first century. While most men would never go to the same lengths as Amnon to get what they desire, many men do go to great lengths to get what they want from women.
How many times have you heard of a young guy breaking a girl’s heart? How common are the words, “He said he loved me, but when he got what he wanted, he dumped me.” Sadly, we live in a world where many men use love to get sex, and many women use sex to get love. It never works that way; that’s why sex was designed by God to remain in marriage. The moment Amnon’s fantasy became reality, he became angry that it did not deliver what it promised, and he took out his anger on his victim, Tamar.
Sexual sin often converts into anger; that’s why a common symptom of a pornography addict is irritability. So here’s a warning to the unmarried: if you think that sexual intercourse will take your relationship to the next level, you’re wrong. It will kill it, because a relationship founded on lust and not love always dies.
The second thing that died was Amnon’s reputation. He was supposed to be the next king; instead, he became a fool. Sadly, women also lose their reputation when they try to win a man over by sleeping with him. He may not kill her physically, but he will kill her with words, such as unkind talk about her body—either to her face or to his friends.
