DAY 23 OF 31

Sealed by the Holy Spirit

Ephesians 4:30 teaches us two things: the Holy Spirit is strong, and the Holy Spirit is sensitive. First, if we are sealed by the Holy Spirit, nothing can break that bond. Once the Holy Spirit has occupied the house, there is no room for another. Moreover, if He seals a vessel, nothing can come in and nothing can get out. So, if you’re born again, take comfort that you are glued to the Spirit of God until Jesus returns. God’s glue is much stronger than the Gorilla Glue you can buy at the local hardware store.

Second, remember the Holy Spirit is sensitive. A missionary couple moved to Jerusalem with the burden to see Jews accept the Messiah, Jesus Christ. Not long after they had bought a house, they discovered there was a white dove living in their rooftop. They saw it as a sign, as a seal on their ministry, since the Scriptures often picture the Holy Spirit as a dove. But they soon realized that every time they argued, every time they slammed a door, the dove would fly away. Rather concerned, one day the husband said to his wife, “Either we adjust to the dove, or the dove needs to adjust to us.” The wife turned around with tears in her eyes and said, “I know. I’m frightened that one day we’ll scare him off, and he’ll never come back.” From that day on, the couple never argued.

We will never truly lose the Holy Spirit once we are sealed, but that doesn’t mean we can’t grieve the Holy Spirit. When we sin, we are hurting the feelings of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is very sensitive and when you gossip, when you lose your temper, when you look at things you shouldn’t; the dove flies away. When we sin, we don’t lose our salvation, but we lose the presence of God. So make sure you are sensitive to the Holy Spirit in your conduct today.
