What to Do if You Are Disappointed with God?

DAY 2 OF 9

If You’re Disillusioned, Don’t Withdraw into Yourself

That very day two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, and they were talking with each other about all these things that had happened.” (Luke 24:13-14)

When you feel downcast and disappointed, it may be natural to withdraw into yourself. You just want to be left alone, since you’re feeling so bad. But that’s not a good idea! On the contrary, it’s generally much more helpful to seek the company of others, preferably fellow believers, and share your troubles with them. You are not alone; as a Christian, you are a member of the worldwide church. And “if one member suffers, all suffer together” (1 Corinthians 12:26).

Today’s verses tell us about two disciples who left the larger group, but at least there were two of them and they were talking together about all the things that had happened. A little further on in the story, when the risen Jesus met these disciples, He asked them what they were talking about. He invited them to share with Him what made them feel sad. He did not immediately explain that He was the risen Lord himself. Instead, He took the time to listen. He gave them the opportunity to vent their disappointment before gently correcting their views.

If you feel downcast, please seek the company of some people who will listen to you. They may not have a solution to your problems, but a friendly ear alone is helpful. Most of all, tell God what you are going through!
