The Poise Of Patrick Mahomes

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes overcame plenty of adversity while leading his team to a Super Bowl title in 2023.

Playing with a high ankle sprain that caused him significant pain, Mahomes kept his composure, throwing for three touchdowns in Kansas City’s 38-35 victory over Philadelphia.

He also won his second Super Bowl MVP award in that contest, thanks in large part to the poise he demonstrated in leading his team back from a ten-point halftime deficit.

There is no doubt that Mahomes has shown himself to be one of the most poised and composed players in the league when dealing with adversity.

But how do we respond when faced with adversity? Do we remain cool and stay under control?

Being a stabilizing presence can be very challenging, especially in our own strength. However, as followers of Jesus, we can carry ourselves with poise, self-control, and confidence during difficult situations when we realize that God is with us and empowering us.

As He tells His people in Isaiah 43:1-2, “…Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are Mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you.”

We ought to remember what 2 Timothy 1:7 says: “For God did not give us a spirit of timidity or cowardice or fear, but [He has given us a spirit] of power and of love and of sound judgment and personal discipline [abilities that result in a calm, well-balanced mind, and self-control].”

David declares the importance of remaining confident in Psalm 27:3: “Though a mighty army surrounds me, my heart will not be afraid. Even if I am attacked, I will remain confident.”

Just like an NFL quarterback, tests will come our way, but when they do, let’s remain calm, cool, and collected. Let's exhibit poise and confidence because, “…blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in Him (Jeremiah 17:7).
