HIStory: A Six Week Study of the Gospel of John

DAY 17 OF 40

“The Truth Will Set You Free"

In this passage, John records a heated conversation between Jesus and some of the Jews who were listening to him teach. Jesus told them that if they followed His teachings, they would be set free. To this, the Jews took offense, because as Jews, they were the “true” descendants of Abraham, not heirs of the illegitimate relationship with Hagar. They believed they were already “free.”

But Jesus wasn’t talking about their heritage. He was talking about their sin. They were living in bondage to their sin and disbelief. In truth, we can have the greatest life and make a lot of money and still be living in bondage. There are so many ways in which we can live enslaved to our fears, addictions, and negative thinking.

It’s in the midst of this teaching that Jesus declares, "if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” This is a promise that we can stand upon when we feel overwhelmed by the powers of this world. Through Jesus we are set free of the power of sin and death!

What area of your life have you felt trapped or enslaved?
What truth can you declare in the powerful name of Jesus?

Pray this prayer...
Dear Jesus, help me to walk in the freedom that you provide today. I know that only your truth has the power to set me free in all areas of my life. Help me to walk in the freedom that you have provided through your death and resurrection! In Jesus' name, amen.

About this Plan

HIStory: A Six Week Study of the Gospel of John

Jesus was more than just a figurative religious voice. He actually walked this earth as a man revealing to us the full nature of God. One of his best friends, John, took time to write down for us the account of his life, ministry, and teachings. This six-week study through the Gospel of John is not only history, but it’s also His Story.
