Psalms to Make You Think

DAY 2 OF 4

Psalm 139

God knows us better than we know ourselves. You might have songs or movies that you know inside out - like you know all the characters' names, and you know all their lines. Or you know all the words, and you always point out that really cool bit that happens in the second verse, because you love it. I think God loves us kinda like that - he knows us inside out, better than we could imagine, and he never gets bored of us, or fed up with us, no matter how much silly stuff we end up doing.

We can never escape from him - this is true in a physical, geographical sense - God’s spirit can travel with us into any town or country, and every room of every house. But this is also true in an emotional sense. God’s spirit can break into any situation, any anxiety, depression, stress, or eating-related disorder. Any argument or disagreement between people. God is so much bigger than all of that. Even when people try to ignore God, he’s still there, ready for people to come back to him at their own pace. When we enter into a relationship with the father, he puts his spirit inside of us, therefore he will be with us wherever we go.

God knitted us together in our mothers’ wombs. Think about the time, effort, and care that goes into a piece of knitwear. Whatever is knitted becomes a very precious thing because people see what it is and know how much care it was made with. It is the same with you! You’re precious because of who you are and how you’re made - you don’t have to earn anything. He made our bodies so wonderfully complex, to the point where they heal themselves when we damage them. When we get cold we shiver and form Goosebumps in order to stay warm. God didn’t just make us for a bit of a laugh, He planned us out and crafted us beautifully into the people we are.

This Psalm ends with an amazing prayer. Asking ‘God would you search me’ is like giving God your heart and saying ‘is there anything here that needs fixing?’ It’s not always easy, but he knows us better than we know ourselves, and he’s always got our best interests in mind. Sometimes it can be a painful process, but God always knows what’s going to be best for us in the long run.

Give him time and see if you can hear him gently stirring anything up in your heart, today.

After you have read through the Psalm for the day, why not have a listen to 'I belong to you ' - By Samuel Lane
