God of the Real World

DAY 2 OF 3

Yesterday, we read that there is one true God who created all things and invites you to know him. But how exactly can we know God?

Sometimes, it can seem like “god” has become an abstract idea, a synonym for “the universe,” a “higher power,” or some ambiguous force that gives off “energy” and “good vibes.”

But the God of the Bible isn’t an idea or an unknown force. He’s a person! And he actually introduced himself to humanity using a personal name.

That name is “Yahweh,” a Hebrew word that translates to “I am who I am.” When you see the word LORD in all caps in your Bible, it’s the English translation of that divine name.

The ancient scribes who copied the oldest biblical manuscripts used capital “L-O-R-D” as a kind of code. They wanted people to pause and read God’s name in their hearts instead of saying it out loud. That’s how deeply reverent they felt toward God; they didn’t feel worthy of being on a first-name basis with him. But here’s the cool part: As holy as God is, he’s also personal. He wants to have a relationship with us!

God isn’t just an idea we believe in. Yahweh is our loving creator and sustainer; he comes close to us, revealing himself and reaching out to humanity. We can read about all the ways he’s done this throughout Scripture and experience it firsthand as we engage in an ongoing relationship with him.

Read: Exodus 3:13-15 and 34:5-7

Reflection Questions:

  1. Think about the idea that God is both holy and personal. Why do you think it’s important for us to understand both aspects of who he is?
  2. Look back to all the characteristics of God in Exodus 34. Which ones have you seen demonstrated in Scripture? Which ones have you experienced in your life?
