Learning Hope From Naomi’s Loss: Readings From Ruth

DAY 5 OF 5

Reflect on today’s reading using these questions:

  • What does Naomi gain in this passage?
  • How does Naomi’s community help her identify God’s blessings?

Care Through Community

Naomi has gained a grandson whom she cares for like a son (4:16–17). She has gained back her family’s land, the favor of the people, security, and a lineage that includes King David and, ultimately, Jesus (Matthew 1:5, 16). God brought this all about for Naomi. And he did so through the faithful love of Ruth and Boaz, even when Naomi was embittered and Ruth herself was recovering from losing her own husband and homeland.

Naomi’s community has witnessed the loss, pain, and changes that she has experienced. They knew Elimelech and the two sons when they lived in Bethlehem (Ruth 1:1) and knew that their death left Naomi without protection and provision (Ruth 1:19).

The community also saw the restoration of Naomi’s family lineage and property through the marriage of Boaz and Ruth (Ruth 4:9–11). They proclaim how God has cared for Naomi even through unexpected ways, like bringing her a faithful daughter-in-law rather than numerous sons (which was more culturally valuable to continue the family line) (Ruth 4:15).

Reflect on your story:

  • Ruth cared for Naomi even when she was suffering herself. What are some ways that you may be caring for others even though you are recovering from something?
  • What friends have stood by you through both difficult and restorative times?

Things to try next

Was this plan helpful? We adapted this plan from the Restoring Hope Bible (American Bible Society, 2022). Here are some ideas for next steps in your journey.

  • Write a note of gratitude to someone who supported and cared for you when you were grieving.
  • Use the complimentary “Three Questions” resource to help others share about their pain and experience healing through safe, non-judgmental listening.

About this Plan

Learning Hope From Naomi’s Loss: Readings From Ruth

The story of Naomi and Ruth is well-known and greatly loved. But the brevity and familiarity of this beautiful story of redemption can cause us to pass over the themes of loss, trauma, and restoration too quickly. On this plan, you will discover how the experience of great loss changes us and affects our views of God and the unexpected ways that God can express his care and provision.
