The Jesus Bible Reading Planنموونە
APPROACHING GOD
God’s people were forbidden from approaching God. Graciously, God dwelt among the people at his appointed mountain. This location, however, was protected lest the sinful people came near to a holy God. The all-consuming holiness of God would consume those who came into his presence. Only the priests at certain appointed times and in clearly defined ways could enter the presence of God. God was so concerned about protecting his dwelling that he instructed Moses to set boundaries around the mountain to keep the people at a safe distance. If the people failed to honor the boundaries, they were harshly judged by God.
The book of Hebrews demonstrates a stark transition that occurred as a result of Christ’s work. Since Jesus perfectly and finally provided the sacrifice for the sins of his people, the dividing walls between God and man have been removed. A new and living way has now been opened whereby God’s people can have confidence to draw near to him through the blood of Christ (Heb 10:19 – 22). Rather than finding safety by maintaining distance from God, those who know Christ can find safety by drawing near to God.
Jesus, thank you for tearing down the dividing walls between God and me. Help me to draw as close to you as I possibly can. Amen.
