How to Dress for a Date

DAY 1 OF 6

The Breastplate Of Righteousness

Have you ever thought about each day being a battle? I’m talking about a battle to overcome the enemy as he tries to prevent you from fulfilling your calling and purpose, especially in dating.

The enemy uses little things to get to you. Maybe you had a run-in with someone who is preventing your healing from a breakup, or maybe you’re struggling with a lie that you just can’t seem to get rid of that is affecting your confidence in your current relationship.

Here’s the deal: there is a real enemy that knows your specific struggles and pain points. He knows them, and he wants to use them against you. Because of this, it’s absolutely crucial for you to armor up. I mean it.

Every morning there is one part of my routine I do not skip. My hair may not be done, but I have to put on the full armor of God before I start the day. Why? Because when the Lord says He has a plan for my life, I want to walk in it, and if I am walking in said plan, you better believe something is going to try to prevent that from happening.

When you’re growing in your faith, you’re a threat to the work the enemy is wanting to do; so what is his next move? Attack. When you’re healing with the Lord, you aren’t vulnerable; so what is his next move? Attack.

You can almost expect it to happen, which is why it’s so important to armor up and be ready when the attacks come.

You may be freaking out a little bit here, thinking you can’t go up against Satan, but you can! God tells us how in His Word. He talks about it by comparing it to when a soldier fights a battle (Eph. 6:10–18). And what’s the first thing a soldier does when they are about to go into battle?

They put on armor.

The first piece of armor we need for battle is the Breastplate of Righteousness. Let’s focus on this piece of armor today.

When you think of where the breastplate is situated, think of your heart. The heart is kept pure and honorable when it’s free from sin or impurities. Therefore, our obedience and righteous behavior is what protects the heart and secures that piece of armor. Obedience is key to this piece of the armor.

Your heart is where your desires and feelings are, so it can be a particularly vulnerable place. The Breastplate of Righteousness keeps your heart on what God wants for you. Instead of being pushed into spaces where you feel like you have no options, you can wear God’s righteousness as protection. Depending on your background, righteousness might sound stuffy or legalistic, but it’s basically just caring about what God wants and doing it.

Here’s a little secret: when you care about only what God wants, Satan’s lies lose their oomph. All the air goes out of them when your heart is aligned with God’s. When you focus on the things God wants for you, you are going to start recognizing and defeating those lies.

Friend, strap on your breastplate and protect your heart with God’s righteousness.

Lord, I need Your armor to fight Satan’s lies. Please help me to put on the Breastplate of Righteousness by obeying You, and keep me safe from believing lies.
