Prophecies fulfilled encourage us – Promises made: Promises kept
There are about 300 prophecies concerning Jesus Christ coming as the Messiah in the Old Testament. These were all given hundreds of years before Jesus Christ appeared on the scene. These fulfillments – and they are all fulfilled to the letter, give us great confidence that all the prophecies of Christ’s second coming will be fulfilled, and that God will ultimately bring perfect justice to every situation that has ever occurred.
Here are some examples:
Prophecy – Zechariah 9:9: “Rejoice greatly, O people of Zion! Shout in triumph, O people of Jerusalem! Look, your king is coming to you. He is righteous and victorious, yet he is humble, riding on a donkey – even on a donkey’s colt.”
Fulfillment by Christ – John 12:12-15: “The next day, the news that Jesus was on the way to Jerusalem swept through the city. A huge crowd of passover visitors took palm branches and went down the road to meet Him. They shouted, ‘Praise God! Bless the One who comes in the name of the Lord! Hail to the King of Israel! Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, fulfilling the prophecy that said: ‘Don’t be afraid, people of Israel. Look, your King is coming, sitting on a donkey’s colt.’”
Prophecy – Isaiah 53:3: "He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering. Like one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not."
Fulfillment by Christ – John 1:10-11: "He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him."
Prophecy – Isaiah 53:7: "He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth."
Fulfillment by Christ – Mark 15:5: "But Jesus still made no reply, and Pilate was amazed."
Here are a few more that you can look up:
Prophecy in Psalm 22:17-18, fulfilled in John 19:23.
Prophecy in Numbers 9:12, fulfilled in John 19:31-37.
Prophecy in Isaiah 53:5-8, 10-12, fulfilled in 1 Peter 2:24 and 1 Corinthians 15:3-4
Prophecy in Isaiah 53:9, fulfilled in Matthew 27:57-60
Prophecy in Psalm 16:10, fulfilled in Matthew 28:6 and Romans 6:8-11
Prophecy in Psalm 110:1, fulfilled in Hebrews 10:12-13 and Acts 2:32-36
There are many many more, and the odds of even these few being fulfilled exactly as predicted are astronomically unlikely. This all has to be God; and a God who was this precise about Jesus Christ coming into the world and effecting our salvation and redemption, will certainly also fulfill all the prophecies about His coming back and making all things right!
Reflection: The incredible precision of everything God says in His Word gives us confidence to enjoy every day, knowing that we are protected in His hands.
