Daily Bible Reading, July 2022: God’s Renewing Word of Faithنموونە
July 27
Introduction
Yesterday’s reading concluded with the Israelites discussing who would lead them in fighting against their enemy, the Ammonites (Judges 10:18). Today we read that they seek out Jephthah and ask him to lead them. Jephthah attempts to negotiate with the king of Ammon, but his efforts fail. The promise he makes in verses 30 and 31 will have heartbreaking implications.
Scripture Reading
Judges 11:1-33
Today’s Key Verse: Judges 11:29a
The spirit of the LORD came upon Jephthah.
Reflect
How is Jephthah described in the opening verses (1-3)? Why do the Israelite leaders want Jephthah to lead them in their fight against the Ammonites (verses 4-8)? What is Jephthah’s response (verse 9)? What was Jephthah’s message to the king of Ammon (verses 12-27)? The events Jephthah recounted can be found in several chapters of the book of Numbers, 20:14-21; 21:4, 21-26; 22:1-6.
Pray
Holy God, teach us the ways of peace and reconciliation. May I speak no harsh words today. Guard my lips so that my words offer encouragement to others and reflect the goodness of your love. Amen.
Tomorrow’s Reading
Judges 11:34-40: Jephthah’s daughter goes out to meet her father.
