DAY 8 OF 8

Never Give Up

Think of the longest match you’ve ever had. Were there lots of back-and-forth points? Did you play an exhausting third or fifth set tiebreaker? Can you remember how tired both your body and mind were when it was over? We all can remember watching a grueling pro match with rallies that lasted for hours.

Winning streaks are wonderful! Many times, you’ll need to press through a slump. Perhaps you have to take time off due to an injury and work hard to come back. Sometimes, you may be sidelined for a while.

The Bible is full of heroes of the faith who never gave up. Job stayed strong when others doubted his faith and His God. Paul was shipwrecked, put in jail, beaten, and left for dead on more than one occasion. Yet, he pressed on, sure of His faith in Christ and the call on his life to share the gospel.

Jesus never ever gave up. He did ask His Heavenly Father “if it is possible, please take this from me.” But, He knew he’d soon be crucified and raised again to fulfill His mission. Thankfully, He pressed on and endured the cross. His life was sacrificed for our sins. Because of His steadfastness, we have eternal life.

Sometimes, a match ends because one player just seems to “give out.” That’s different than giving up. Often, all you need to do is get the next ball back. You’ll have more success in tennis and in life if you vow to never give up, to press on despite difficulties. Stay present and prayerful in your roles, responsibilities, and relationships.

Love, in tennis, means “zero.” Yet, in life, love is so much more. Instead of “nothing” it’s actually everything. On or off the court, it’s really all about love. Love God, your opponents, others and yourself. Aim high, above the net, and have a heavenly mindset. Aspire not to be impressive but to leave an impression—an impression of Christ. The best players and people show up, set up, serve up, and never, ever give up.

Dear Father, may I reflect You in my character, my tennis game, and my daily walk with You. Thank you for creating me and allowing me to enjoy the great game of tennis. Thank you for my life that is not defined by how I play. Help me remember that tennis is something I do but is not who I am. I am not defined by my score. My desire is to play your way, each day. Help me to live above the net in all I say and do. May my life honor You on and off the court.
